Blood drawn at your home or workplace · Analysed by Randox · Results in about 72 hours · Explained by Lucy, our lead clinician
The Advanced PSA Blood Test measures total PSA, free PSA and the free-to-total PSA ratio. The ratio helps give a clearer picture than total PSA alone, because PSA can be raised by things other than cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, and about one in eight UK men will be diagnosed in their lifetime. Many men avoid testing because they do not know where to start. This test makes it straightforward.
What the Advanced PSA Blood Test measures
| Biomarker | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Total PSA (prostate-specific antigen) | The main prostate screening marker; raised levels can reflect inflammation, enlargement or cancer |
| Free PSA | The portion of PSA not bound to proteins in the blood |
| Free-to-total PSA ratio | A calculation that helps clinicians tell benign enlargement apart from results that need a closer look |
Why the ratio matters
PSA can be raised by infection, inflammation or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), not just cancer. Measuring free and total PSA and calculating the ratio gives you and your clinician a more meaningful result to act on.

Frequently asked questions
How long do results take?
Results are usually available within 72 hours.
Is a PSA test a test for prostate cancer?
No. PSA is a screening marker, not a diagnosis. A raised result has many possible causes and usually needs further assessment by a clinician.
How should I prepare for a PSA test?
The usual advice is to avoid ejaculation and vigorous exercise such as cycling for 48 hours beforehand, and to wait if you have recently had a urinary infection. We will confirm what applies to you when you book.
Is PSA testing available on the NHS?
The NHS does not offer routine PSA screening to men without symptoms, but men aged 50 and over can ask their GP for a test after discussing the pros and cons.
What is a normal PSA level?
It depends on your age and the laboratory's reference range. Your results come with an explanation of what they mean for you.
What is the difference between this and the standard PSA test?
A standard PSA test reports total PSA only. The Advanced PSA test also reports free PSA and the ratio, which can make the result easier to interpret.

Good to know
PSA is a screening marker, not a diagnosis, and a raised result has many possible causes. This test does not replace care from your GP, and if you have urinary symptoms or are worried, you should seek medical advice. See our Privacy Policy for how we handle your health information.
